Korea’s Tidal Flats Poised for Major UNESCO Expansion

South Korea's already UNESCO-listed tidal flats (getbol) are getting a major expansion, adding coastal wetlands in four new locations across South Jeolla and South Chungcheong provinces. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has recommended the expansion, which will be voted on at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Busan this July. The original 2021 listing recognized Korea's tidal flats for their unique geology and incredible biodiversity—home to 2,150 species including 22 endangered ones.
Why It Matters
If you're into nature, coastal hiking, or eco-tourism, these expanded wetlands offer stunning landscapes and rare wildlife viewing opportunities that are now getting world-class recognition and protection.
