For the month of August, Seoul sets up 200 riverside camping sites — 100 at Yeouido, 100 at Ttukseom — open daily from 17:00 to 09:00 the next morning. Advance booking through the official site, first-come.

For the whole of August, Seoul lets you sleep on the Han River. Hangang Bamping — bam (night) plus camping — sets up 100 camping sites at Yeouido Hangang Park and another 100 at Ttukseom, open daily from 17:00 until 09:00 the next morning.

The appeal is the location rather than the wilderness. You are pitched on riverside grass in the middle of a city of ten million, with the bridges lit up across the water, convenience stores and fried chicken delivery a few minutes away, and the first subway of the morning waiting when you pack up. It is camping with the city still switched on around you.

Sites must be booked in advance through the official reservation site, and they go first-come. Check there for what each site includes, tent rental and any restrictions before you plan the night — the booking pages are Korean-language, so give yourself time or ask for help.
