The Hangang River Festival is Seoul city’s own seasonal celebration of the river that splits the capital in two. The summer edition runs August 1–16, 2026 across the Han River parks, turning the water and its banks into one long open-air venue for just over two weeks.
What it is
Rather than one stage in one park, the festival is a spread of programs — water leisure sessions, riverside performances, programs that run on into the night, and picnic-friendly events — distributed across the Hangang parks. Many are free; some require advance booking through the city’s official festival site.
Why it works for visitors
August in Seoul is hot and humid, and the river is where the city goes to survive it. Locals arrive after sunset with convenience-store food, mats and folding chairs, and stay until late. The festival essentially gives that everyday habit a schedule. You can join with zero preparation: take the subway to a riverside park, buy dinner at the nearest convenience store, and sit down.
Getting there
The main Han River parks — Yeouido, Ttukseom, Banpo, Jamsil, Mangwon and Nanji — all sit within walking distance of a subway station. Check the official festival site for the program map before heading out, since events are spread across different parks on different days.
