The Festival
The Muju Firefly Festival is held in the pristine Namdeok Valley in Muju, North Jeolla Province (June 5–8), where thousands of fireflies naturally illuminate the nights in one of Korea’s cleanest river ecosystems. The firefly population here is designated a Natural Monument — their presence is a living indicator of unpolluted water. Watching the valley floor come alive with moving light after dark is genuinely unlike anything in an urban environment, and the remoteness of the location means the sky is also dark enough for real stargazing.
Festival Programs
Daytime activities include raft rides, trout fishing, stream wading, traditional folk performances, and eco-education programs that contextualize the firefly habitat. The firefly nighttime walk is the centerpiece — guided evening programs take groups through the valley during peak emergence hours (typically 9–11PM). The valley is cool at night even in June; bring a light jacket. Crowds are modest by Korean festival standards, making this an unusually peaceful experience.
Getting There
- From Seoul: Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Muju (about 2.5 hours)
- From Daejeon or Jeonju: Direct buses to Muju run during the festival period
- Shuttle: Festival shuttles run from Muju town center to Namdeok Valley
- Accommodation: Muju has pensions and guesthouses; Muju Resort (ski resort in winter) operates nearby
