독립문·사직공원

Independence Gate — built in 1897 as a symbol of Korean sovereignty at the site of the former Yeongeunmun gate used for receiving Chinese envoys — stands at the entrance to Seodaemun Independence Park, where Seodaemun Prison Museum documents the Japanese colonial-era detention and execution of Korean independence activists. The adjacent Sajik Park preserves the site of the Joseon royal altar for the gods of earth and grain, now a forested urban park with one of the better views over central Seoul from its ridge. The two sites together form a compact but significant circuit through Korean political and historical memory.
