Gwanghwamun Square — the central axis of Seoul connecting Gyeongbokgung Palace to City Hall — is most atmospherically visited at night when the illuminated Gwanghwamun Gate, the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue, and the mountain backdrop of Bugaksan are visible above the empty plaza. The night architecture walk from Gwanghwamun north to the palace gate takes about 20 minutes and the palace wall illumination system operates until 10 p.m. in summer. The square redesign completed in 2022 widened the pedestrian area significantly and added the underground Seoul History Museum section accessible from the square. The early morning visit before 7 a.m. finds the entire axis empty except for the security detail.
