A community-led public art installation programme in Hwagok-dong has produced a distributed garden of small sculptures, murals, and planted installations across the residential streets of the neighbourhood. The programme was initiated by a local arts cooperative and the works are maintained by the community rather than the city government. The installations are small-scale and integrated into the ordinary residential streetscape in a way that avoids the self-consciousness of official public art. Walking the network without a map — the works are not aggregated on any public platform — is the most rewarding approach.
