조계사

The head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, hidden in plain sight a short walk from Insadong and Gyeongbokgung. The main hall Daeungjeon, built in 1938, is classified as a national cultural property and houses a large gilded triad of Buddhas. The 500-year-old zelkova and Chinese scholar trees in the forecourt are designated natural monuments — their canopies fill the courtyard. Jogyesa is fully active: monks chant morning and evening, and worshippers burn incense daily. During Lotus Lantern Festival (late April–May), tens of thousands of coloured lanterns fill the temple grounds in what is one of Seoul's most photogenic annual events. Entry is free.
