A self-described "community village" that formed around Seongmisan mountain in Mapo-gu in the early 2000s, built on cooperative principles: a shared childcare cooperative, community café, co-op market, and collectively run spaces occupy the narrow lanes between the mountain and Yeonnam-dong. The village became a minor urban legend in Seoul as proof that alternative community models could survive in a major city. The small businesses are mostly resident-run; the atmosphere is calm and independent-bookshop-and-handmade-coffee compared to the busier Hongdae strip 15 minutes downhill. The mountain itself is small (66m) but has a pleasant forest trail and good city views.
