The UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan is the only UN-designated cemetery in the world, holding the remains of soldiers from seventeen countries who died during the Korean War. The grounds are maintained to the standard of a military memorial park — precisely kept, dignified, and unlike anything else in Korea. The memorial wall, the reflecting pool, and the individual national sections are open to visitors year-round. The site is entirely solemn and operates outside any tourist economy logic. Visiting in November around the memorial days sees ceremonies with representatives of the participating nations; ordinary visits are quiet and largely private.
