South Korea’s annual monsoon season officially begins today, with the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasting weeks of heavy rain across the country. The seasonal rain front has moved northward overnight, bringing widespread showers and potential flooding risks.
Major regions including Seoul, Busan, and Gwangju are expected to receive 150–200mm of rainfall over the coming days, with some localized downpours reaching 50mm per hour. The KMA has issued heavy rain advisories and flood warnings for low-lying areas and mountainous regions prone to landslides.
Local governments have activated emergency response teams and are closely monitoring rivers, reservoirs, and urban drainage systems. Commuters have been advised to prepare for possible delays and disruptions in public transportation as the rain intensifies.
The monsoon season in South Korea typically lasts from late June through late July, but meteorologists note that climate change has made rainfall patterns more unpredictable in recent years.
