When you think of K-Beauty, you might picture skincare or makeup — but recently, foreign tourists have been flocking to Korean hair salons for an unexpected beauty experience. According to Visit Korea, more than 30% of young travelers from Southeast Asia and Japan said they would like to get a haircut or color service during their stay, just to feel like a “K-pop idol for a day.”
A quick walk through popular tourist districts like Myeongdong or Hongdae shows how many salons now offer bilingual booking apps, same-day walk-ins, and even “K-Idol Styling” packages. A Japanese exchange student named Haruka shared, “At home, I’d wait weeks for a reservation, and it’s expensive. Here, I got a bleach and tone in just two hours — my stylist even suggested which color suits my skin best. It felt like a K-drama moment!”
Social media posts under hashtags like #KHair and #KSalon show tourists showing off their fresh Korean-style bangs, sleek perms, or bright ash colors that would cost double or triple back home. Many praise the “idol treatment” — one cup of coffee, smartphone charger, celebrity magazines, and a photo wall for instant before-and-after shots.
Another interesting point: tipping is not expected. For Westerners, it feels surreal to get such detailed service — full wash, scalp massage, blow-dry, and finishing touch — without having to calculate a 15% tip. Some salons even offer “self-photo zones” and mini ring lights for your final “I got my hair done in Korea” moment.
Experts say this is part of the broader K-Beauty phenomenon: not just selling products, but offering an experience that makes you feel like a star — if only for a few hours.
My Take: I completely understand why foreigners prefer K-salons. Experiencing a style and culture that is hard to find in the West can be a truly valuable part of traveling in Korea. (This is my personal opinion.)
