Noryangjin Fish Market in Dongjak-gu is the largest wholesale and retail seafood market in Seoul, operating 24 hours with the full wholesale session before dawn and retail from early morning. The market occupies both the original 1971 building and the adjacent modern facility; the older building retains the wholesale atmosphere with stacked crates and the auction floor. The upper restaurant floors of the market building allow visitors to purchase fish from the retail vendors below and have it prepared immediately. The market is most active between midnight and 6 a.m. for wholesale and from 10 a.m. for retail visitors. The adjacent Noryangjin Learning Centre area creates an unusual urban juxtaposition of the market and Seoul's largest exam-preparation district.
