Jeongdongjin is the easternmost railway station in Korea built directly on a beach, with a track that ends a few metres from the water. The surrounding cliffs and the Sandglass Park above the beach give elevated views over the East Sea that are at their most dramatic at sunrise. The site is due east of Gwanghwamun in Seoul and directly catches the first sunrise of the New Year, making it one of the two or three primary New Year sunrise destinations in Korea. The Hourglass Park was built to commemorate the 2000 millennium; the Unification Park above holds decommissioned naval vessels. The beach immediately south of the station is accessible and quiet outside the New Year period.
