Daehangno in Hyehwa-dong is the theatre district of Seoul — over 150 small theatres, performance spaces, and experimental venues are concentrated in a radius of 500 metres around Marronnier Park. The district has been Seoul's off-mainstream performance centre since the cultural development of the 1980s; the combination of university theatre groups, established companies, and experimental venues gives the programme a range unavailable anywhere else in the city. Weekend afternoons between noon and 6 p.m. have the highest density of simultaneous performances. The street performers in Marronnier Park and the theatre-going crowd give the area an energy distinct from any other Seoul cultural district.
