Hyochang Park in Yongsan-gu serves dual functions as a neighbourhood park and a memorial site — the tombs of several independence movement leaders including Yun Bong-gil, Lee Bong-chang, and White Bear Kim Gu are located within the park grounds. The morning hours before 9 a.m. find the park almost entirely populated by local elderly residents doing morning exercises among the tombs and mature trees. The combination of the active memorial function and the ordinary neighbourhood park use gives the space a quality found in few other Seoul parks. The Hyochang-dong area around the park holds several long-running makgeolli houses.
