The rocky slopes of Inwangsan are studded with shamanist shrines — small structures built into crevices and overhangs where mudang (shamans) conduct rituals that have continued on this mountain for centuries. Guksadang, the main shrine near the summit, was relocated here from Namsan in 1925 and remains active. The hike up passes multiple smaller shrines and the rocks painted with prayers. An aspect of Korean spiritual life that is rarely covered in conventional tourism.
