The antique dealers' alley branching off the main Itaewon road toward the hillside holds a concentration of Korean and Asian antique furniture dealers, ceramic specialists, and art dealers that has operated in this location since the 1970s, when the area's foreign resident population generated a market for collectibles. The alley dealers handle Joseon-period furniture, celadon and white porcelain, Buddhist art, and colonial-era objects in a format that ranges from open-air displays to well-lit gallery spaces. The quality ranges considerably; the serious dealers are identifiable by the narrowness of their specialisation. The adjacent Hamilton Hotel area above is a parallel foreign-oriented bar district that operates on a different logic entirely.
