The steep alley running north from Itaewon station toward the US Army base has had a complicated history tied directly to the military presence since the Korean War. The bars and clubs that gave the street its old reputation have largely closed, replaced by a more ordinary mix of small restaurants and late-night venues. The street is interesting not for what it is now but for what it represents — the most visible seam in Seoul where the postwar US-Korea relationship made itself physical.
