The two-block radius around Deoksugung Palace contains more late 19th-century history per square meter than anywhere else in Korea. The first foreign embassies, the first Western-style school, the first Protestant church, and the first modern theater in Korea all operated within walking distance of each other between 1880 and 1905. Several original buildings survive — the Russian Legation tower, the American Embassy compound, Ewha Haksang. A self-guided walk connects all of them.
