The traditional market in Macheon-dong at the southeastern corner of Songpa-gu is one of the few functional neighbourhood markets in this part of the city that operates primarily for the local residential population rather than as a tourist or gastronomic destination. The market is covered and compact — perhaps sixty to eighty stalls — and the goods are entirely practical: fresh vegetables, banchan, dried goods, household items. The surrounding Macheon-dong neighbourhood has a distinctly older residential character compared to the apartment-dominated Jamsil zones. The market is at its best on weekday mornings before 11 a.m.
