Naju Seokbinggo — Korea’s Oldest Ice Storage Chamber

Buried into a hillside in Naju's old town, this Joseon-era underground ice house (seokbinggo) is one of only a handful remaining in Korea and the least visited of them. Natural ice was cut from rivers in winter and stored here, providing the royal court and aristocracy with ice through summer — a genuinely extraordinary feat of pre-industrial refrigeration. The chamber is small and the signage is sparse, but the stone construction and the earthen insulation layers are intact. Naju itself is overlooked — it was once one of the most important cities in Jeollanam-do, and the old tile-roofed houses and earthen walls of the historic district reward a slow afternoon walk that almost no foreigner takes.
