Nakseongdae Park in Gwanak-gu preserves the birthplace of General Gang Gam-chan, the Goryeo dynasty military commander who defeated the Khitan invasion of 1019. The site holds the original birthplace marker, a shrine, and a traditional garden that functions as a quiet neighbourhood park within walking distance of Seoul National University. The academic and residential character of the surrounding Gwanak-gu district gives the park a contemplative quality that larger heritage sites in the city lack. The surrounding Sillim-dong streets have several long-running Korean restaurants that serve the academic and student community, operating on entirely local terms.
