The cable car up Namsan has operated since 1962 and provides a three-minute ascent to the N Seoul Tower base with views over the Myeongdong and Yongsan districts during the ride. The summit area itself is a public park accessible on foot via several hiking trails from the surrounding districts — the Huam-dong approach from the south and the Toegye-ro approach from the north are both walkable without the cable car. Early morning summit walks before 8 a.m. find the observation decks largely empty; the mountain is in a different state entirely before the daytime tourist traffic begins.
