Paju Book City is a purpose-built publishing and cultural district 50 kilometres north of Seoul, housing over 250 publishing companies and related cultural businesses in architect-designed buildings laid out on a grid alongside the Hangang tributary. The adjacent Heyri Art Village is a community of approximately 380 artists, architects, and cultural producers whose workshops, galleries, and performance spaces are spread across a 36-hectare woodland site. The two districts together represent the most deliberate concentration of cultural infrastructure outside Seoul's city limits. The annual Paju Book Festival draws significant visitors; the ordinary weekend is quiet enough to allow unhurried engagement with the galleries and bookshops.
