Pungnap-dong in Songpa-gu sits on the site of the ancient Baekje capital Wiryeseong, and the neighbourhood market here operates alongside the excavated earthen fortress walls that remain visible in the residential streets. The market serves the older residential population of the neighbourhood and operates on a traditional schedule — busy in the morning, largely closed by early afternoon. The combination of the archaeological significance of the area — the fortress walls are UNESCO-listed as part of the Baekje historic areas — and the entirely ordinary neighbourhood market makes Pungnap an unusual place in the context of Seoul's heritage landscape.
