The back alleys of the Pyeonghwa Market area near the Cheonggyecheon in Jung-gu hold a cluster of informal bar operations that have survived the redevelopment of the surrounding garment district. The bars operate in the covered arcade sections and the narrow alleys behind the market building, primarily serving the market workers, traders, and the evening crowd that uses the area as a lower-cost alternative to the main Jongno bar streets. Draft makgeolli and fried seasonal dishes are the standard offer. The atmosphere is as undesigned as it gets and the contrast with the visible gentrification of Cheonggyecheon nearby is considerable.
