Seongsu-dong's identity as Seoul's artisan quarter is rooted in its shoe manufacturing history — the area has produced handmade footwear since the 1960s and several of the original cordwainer workshops still operate alongside the cafes and concept stores that have transformed the neighbourhood's international profile. The shoe workshop streets retain working production operations that are visible from the street; several offer custom order services. The surrounding areas hold metalworking studios, leather goods makers, and craft workshops that represent the artisan layer below the more publicised cafe and gallery economy. The interaction between the old manufacturing base and the incoming creative economy is more visible here than in any comparable Seoul district.
