Korea's first public park, established in 1897, sits behind a low stone wall on the main Jongno boulevard. The ten-story marble pagoda inside — the Wongaksa site pagoda — dates to 1467 and was the most detailed piece of stone carving from the Joseon period when it was made. The park is famously where the March 1st Independence Movement declaration was read aloud in 1919. Weekday afternoons, the benches fill with elderly men playing baduk and chess.
