Yakhyeon Cathedral, completed in 1892, was the first Western-style church built in Korea and sits on a hill in Jung-gu that has been a Catholic site for centuries. The Gothic brick building is older than Myeongdong Cathedral and sees a fraction of the visitors. The surrounding alley has been a Catholic neighborhood since the 18th century when Christian converts gathered here during persecution. The church is active and open to visitors during non-service hours.
