A festival on top of a Neolithic village

The Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival runs October 16 to 18, 2026 at the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site and Amsa History Park in Gangdong-gu, far eastern Seoul. Admission is free, per the Seoul city October culture calendar. This is the 31st edition.

Why this site

Amsa-dong is one of the largest Neolithic settlement sites in Korea — people lived on this bend of the Han River around 6,000 years ago, and the pit houses you walk between are reconstructions placed on the excavated ground. Most of Seoul’s history on offer to visitors is Joseon-era, five or six centuries old. This is the layer underneath all of it.

Practical

Amsa Station (Line 8) is the nearest subway stop, then a walk; Line 5 Godeok or Sangil-dong also work with a bus. The detailed programme is published by Gangdong District close to the date — the city listing confirms the dates, venue and free admission, but not the hour-by-hour schedule. Going on a weekend day (Oct 17–18) means more of the hands-on programmes are running.
