Beopjusa in the Songnisan range of Chungcheongbuk-do is one of the five great mountain temples of Korea, holding the largest wooden pagoda in Asia — the Palsangjeon, five stories of timber construction built in 553 CE and reconstructed in 1624. The approach road through the pine and fir forest of Songnisan National Park precedes the temple and is historically celebrated as one of the most beautiful forest drives in Korea. The Mireuk Daebul — a 33-metre golden Buddha statue — dominates the courtyard. The Songnisan ridge above provides access to Cheonhwangbong peak at 1,058 metres. Accessible from Seoul by express bus to Boeun in about two hours.
