Gangjin in South Jeolla Province was the primary production centre of Goryeo celadon — the jade-green glazed pottery that represents the highest technical achievement of Korean ceramic history. The Gangjin Celadon Museum sits adjacent to the Sadang-ri kiln sites where over 180 identified kiln locations document nine centuries of continuous production from the 9th century. The museum holds the finest collection of extant Goryeo celadon outside the National Museum, and the kiln site excavation is accessible alongside the exhibition. The surrounding Gangjin area holds the Dasan Chodang — the hermitage where the philosopher Jeong Yak-yong spent 18 years in exile producing his major works.
