Seoul's grandest Joseon-era palace, built in 1395 and fully restored after Japanese-era demolition. The main gate Gwanghwamun faces south toward the mountains; behind it, Geunjeongjeon throne hall sits in a vast stone courtyard used for royal ceremonies. The National Folk Museum and the National Palace Museum are both inside the grounds — entrance to the outer gardens is free, full palace 3,000 KRW. The changing of the royal guard ceremony runs hourly at the main gate. Gyeonghoeru pavilion, built on an island in an artificial lake, is the most-photographed spot. Rent hanbok near the exit for free entry.
