Tapgol Park in Jongno is the oldest public park in Korea — originally the site of the Wongaksa Buddhist temple, demolished in 1504, and opened as a public park in 1897 during the Korean Empire period. The Wongaksa Pagoda (a 15th-century marble pagoda, National Treasure) stands in the park centre. The park is historically significant as the starting point of the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. It currently functions as a gathering space primarily for the elderly population of central Seoul, who occupy the park benches and the surrounding Nakwon Arcade area throughout the day. The contrast between the park's historical weight and its current role as a neighbourhood gathering space for older residents gives it a specific urban texture.
