Gyeongbokgung Palace in Jongno-gu opens at 9 a.m. and the first 30-60 minutes before the main tourist crowds arrive give a qualitatively different experience of the palace grounds — the Geunjeongjeon throne hall, the Gyeonghoeru banquet pavilion, and the Hyangwonjeong garden can be experienced at the pace and with the silence that they were designed for. The dawn light through the east gate and the palace architecture in the early morning with the Bugaksan ridge behind gives the defining historical landscape image of Seoul. The night tour programme (seasonal) gives a third temporal perspective on the same buildings with full illumination.
