Mokpo's original Japanese colonial-era port district preserves the highest concentration of early 20th-century commercial and administrative architecture in a single district outside Gunsan and Incheon. The 1897 Mokpo Open Port area holds the former Japanese consulate, the Dongyang Cheoksan Bank, colonial-era residential streets, and several converted heritage buildings now operating as small museums and cafes. The hillside above the port gives views over the island-scattered Yellow Sea that explain the port's strategic and commercial significance. The area is accessible from Seoul by KTX to Mokpo in two and a half hours; the entire colonial district is walkable from the station in under 20 minutes.
