Abai Village in Sokcho is a settlement of displaced persons from North Korea's Hamkyung Province who settled at the Cheongchoho lagoon after the Korean War armistice and have remained there since, creating a community that has preserved North Korean regional food traditions — ojingeo sundae (squid stuffed with noodles and pork) and Hamhung-style naengmyeon — for over 70 years. The village is accessed by a hand-pulled ferry across the lagoon from the tourist strip; the crossing is 30 metres and takes about two minutes. The interior lanes hold the original North Korean-style houses alongside the seafood restaurants and the Sokcho seafront is directly visible across the lagoon.
