Hoengseong in Gangwon-do produces the most consistently regarded quality Korean beef (hanwoo) in the country — the specific combination of the valley climate, the mountain pasture grass, and the traditional slow-growing practice produces beef that commands a premium over standard Korean hanwoo in Seoul restaurants. The Hoengseong Hanwoo Festival in October is the primary market event, but the direct purchase restaurants in the town operate year-round and the price per grade is significantly lower than Seoul equivalent establishments. The surrounding Hoengseong valley and the Seomgang River provide the landscape context for the agricultural system that produces the beef.
