"84 Square Meters" follows the story of Woo-sung (played by Kang Ha-neul), a young man who pours everything he has into purchasing an 84㎡ apartment. To keep up with the heavy mortgage, he conserves every bit of electricity and works multiple jobs. The film delves into his entanglement with a cryptocurrency scheme and the psychological pressure from persistent noise between floors.

[Main Story]
Woo-sung is an average office worker who puts all his savings into buying a standard-sized apartment. To save costs, he charges lights and fans at the office to use them at home and works food delivery shifts after work. When a coworker quits after a crypto windfall, Woo-sung is tempted into a coin scheme himself.
Desperate for capital, he sells the apartment to fund the venture. Meanwhile, tensions rise due to constant noise complaints. Sticky notes from the downstairs neighbor keep urging quiet due to their child studying for college entrance exams. Woo-sung eventually confronts his upstairs neighbor, Jin-ho, and goes floor by floor trying to identify the real source.
Though he seems to be managing the stress with hope for a coin spike, he becomes the prime suspect for the noise and is arrested on the day he plans to sell his coins. He misses the window, plunges into despair, and contemplates ending his life. Jin-ho visits him, discovers Woo-sung is not the culprit, and together they bond while uncovering the real cause of the noise.

[Viewer Opinion]
The film starts with a very relatable setup—loan burdens, housing struggles, and the temptation of cryptocurrency—all familiar to the modern Korean audience. In the beginning, the movie presents these issues with a light tone. However, the tone shifts drastically once the story dives into the mystery of the noise problem.
While this tonal shift adds suspense, some may find the transition abrupt. Though the narrative deepens emotionally, the ending may feel slightly hollow to some viewers. Still, the immersive build-up and social relevance make it worth the watch.

At one point, Woo-sung suspects the building manager, especially with the ongoing noise and the manager’s real estate activity linked to new train construction. However, the true culprit turns out to be Jin-ho himself. He was gathering noise data for a legal campaign and had used Woo-sung to gain access to documents from a former prosecutor who managed the penthouse.
Both Jin-ho and the manager meet tragic ends. Woo-sung, discovering the lease contract among the remains, burns it as the penthouse explodes due to a gas leak. The film closes with Woo-sung smiling faintly, perhaps finally free from the noise—both literal and emotional.
