The stream running through central Seoul was channeled underground in the 1970s and restored as an open canal in 2005 along a 5.8km path from Gwanghwamun to eastern Seoul. The walkway below street level is separated from traffic noise and gives the city a different scale — narrower, more human. At the Gwanghwamun end, the stone laundry stones and traditional patterns; at the east end, the waterway widens into a natural bed. Best walked from west to east.
