Chuncheon is the origin city of dakgalbi — spicy stir-fried marinated chicken with rice cakes, cabbage, and sweet potato in a flat iron skillet — and the Myeongdong dakgalbi alley near the central bus terminal has been serving the dish since the 1960s. The Chuncheon version is made on a flat iron skillet at the table rather than in a stone pot; the flavour profile is tangier than the Seoul restaurant equivalents due to the fermented gochujang-based marinade that the original Chuncheon operations developed. The alley holds around thirty adjacent restaurants all serving variations of the same dish; the quality competition between them has kept the standard consistently high.
