The only royal palace surrounded by modern city hall, lending it a uniquely melancholic atmosphere. Deoksugung served as the last residence of Emperor Gojong during the collapse of the Joseon dynasty. Inside are two Western-style stone buildings — Seokjojeon and Junghwajeon — now housing royal art collections. The changing of the guard ceremony at Daehanmun gate is one of Seoul's best free shows, running three times daily. The Stonewall Promenade (돌담길) running along the palace wall toward Jeongdong-gil is a romantic tree-lined walk particularly beautiful in autumn and early spring.
