The old and new Seoul City Halls sit side by side on Taepyeongno — the 1926 Japanese colonial-era building is now the Seoul Metropolitan Library, open free to the public. The glass wave structure of the new City Hall (2012) is polarising in design but impressive in scale. Seoul Plaza in front hosts events year-round: an ice rink in winter, public concerts in summer, and the city's most prominent outdoor gatherings. The location directly between Deoksugung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square makes it a natural waypoint on any walking tour of central Seoul. The basement of the new City Hall has free exhibition spaces.
