The Chuam coastline in Donghae holds a cluster of sea-eroded limestone rock formations of which the Chojdaebawi — the candlestick rock — is the most famous: a single narrow column rising from the tidal platform. The rock and the surrounding sea stacks are best seen at low tide when the full extent of the coastal platform is exposed. The sunrise here is one of the most photographed on the East Sea coast; the rock silhouette against the early morning light is the definitive East Sea sunrise image. The surrounding Chuam beach and pine grove provide a complete walking circuit of about 2 kilometres.
