Geomundo Island Three Ports (거문도 삼항)

📍 Samsan-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do

Geomundo Island, accessible by ferry from Yeosu in about two hours, is the most remote inhabited island off the South Jeolla coast and holds an unusual colonial history — the island was occupied by the British Navy for two years (1885-1887) as a strategic base for monitoring Russian naval movements in the East Asia region. The British grave site and the commemorative markers from the occupation are maintained on the island. The island is famous for its camellia forest and its sea bass fishing; the harbour area with its three connected ports gives the island its name. The surrounding waters have some of the clearest visibility in the Korean coastal zone.
