Goseong county reaches further north than any other civilian zone on the east coast, and the Unification Observatory sits on a ridge above the sea with North Korea's Geumgangsan mountain range visible on clear days — you're looking at one of East Asia's most sacred peaks from the last place on earth that gives you this view. Entry requires a brief security registration at a checkpoint 10km south, which adds a genuine frisson of reality that no other tourist experience in Korea replicates. The coastal road north from Sokcho to the observatory passes through small fishing villages including Daejin Port, which has some of the best raw sea urchin bibimbap (성게비빔밥) in the province.
