Hongcheon is the geographic center of Gangwon-do and almost entirely bypassed by tourists routing directly to the coast or ski resorts. Pallegol Valley follows a clean mountain stream through old-growth forest and ends at a series of pools used by local families for summer swimming — no entry fee, no facilities, no English signage. The 4km walk along the valley floor is one of the most peaceful river walks in the province precisely because there is no infrastructure to attract crowds. The nearby Hongcheon River itself is known among fly-fishing communities for wild trout populations that have returned following decades of habitat protection.
