Goyang Haengju Fortress and Sanseong Trail (고양 행주산성)

Haengju Sanseong on a ridge above the Hangang River in Goyang is the site of the 1593 Battle of Haengju, where 2,300 Korean defenders repelled an attacking Japanese force of 30,000 during the Imjin War — one of the most celebrated defensive victories of the war. The fortress walls on the ridge are partially preserved and the circuit trail takes about 45 minutes. The view from the ridge over the Hangang and toward the Seoul skyline to the east gives the best view of the Han River basin from the western side. The ridge forest above the residential Haengju-dong neighbourhood gives the fortress a preserved setting that the closer-in Seoul fortress sites lack.
