Piagol Valley in Gurye on the Jirisan National Park southern approach provides what is consistently rated the best autumn colour valley in Korea — the concentration of maple trees in the narrow gorge creates a tunnel of red-orange colour from early to mid-October that is visible from the trail at close range rather than the distant mountain colour of broader ridge routes. The valley trail follows the Piagol stream from Jikjeon hamlet to the Samdo Bridge junction, about 3.5 kilometres one way. The colour peak in the first two weeks of October requires a weekday visit to avoid the weekend crowds. The surrounding Gurye area holds Hwaeomsa Temple accessible within the same Jirisan approach.
